Cleansing Balm

A cleansing balm utilizes oils and emollients to break down makeup, dirt, SPF, sweat, excess oils, and other impurities that might be on the skin. They’re great for dry skin types since they’re so nourishing, but they’re also really effective for oily skin types as oil attracts oils, so helps to remove any excess. Balms are great for melting away heavy makeup (even waterproof formulas) or breaking down thickly applied SPF which is hard to shift. Unlike surfactant-based cleansers (those which foam up), cleansing balms are non-irritating and won’t dry out your skin, compromise its moisture barrier, or disrupt its pH. Cleansing Balms are thicker than a cleansing oil.

Since they’re packed with oils, balm cleansers are incredibly nourishing and moisturizing, leaving skin feeling soft and smooth. Cleansing balms should first be applied dry. This is because the oils in the balm need to attract to the oil on the skin before adding water. Once water is added the surfactants release the surface tension on the skin, which then lifts and removes the makeup and allows it to rinse off. Think of a balm as a makeup remover, cleanser, and oil serum all in one.

Directions

Scoop a small amount with dry clean fingers and massage into your skin in gentle, circular motions. Keep away from eyes as the exfoliating ingredients can irritate. Add warm water onto the skin and continue to massage in gentle circular motions. Remove with a warm, damp cloth. After you have removed the cleansing balm your skin will feel clean and fresh.
